Reconsider Roadside Assistance Coverage

by AIRD on August 31, 2011

Does your auto insurance include roadside assistance coverage? If so, find out what it covers and how much its costing you. Common roadside services include towing, tire change, battery jump start, emergency fuel and fluid delivery and locksmith service. Depending on what your policy includes and your driving habits, you may decide to forgo the coverage and save money on your premium. Or, consider other sources of roadside assistance insurance, such as automobile clubs, and compare prices. If you are covered by your auto insurance as well as another insurer, you probably don’t need both and may consider dropping one of them.

When looking to reduce your auto insurance premium, one of the first options that comes to mind is to raise your deductibles. However, this requires careful consideration and calculations before you’ll know if its a good idea. Weigh the reduction in premium against the additional amount you’ll be responsible for in case of an accident. For example, if you save $100 per year in premiums, but will have to pay an additional $1000 in out-of-pocket expenses for a claim, it would take 10 years of accident-free driving to recoup the additional risk. Use your own numbers and determine the risk for yourself. Only you can be the judge.
